Mikhail Baryshnikov was born into a Russian family in Riga, Latvia. He never returned to the USSR. In 2005, he launched the Baryshnikov Arts Center in New York.

Baryshnikov's significance lies in his technical brilliance and his role in bridging classical ballet and modern dance. As artistic director of the American Ballet Theatre, he shaped the company's repertoire.
